Jumpstart NYC aimed to achieve three goals for the 2021–2022 year. The first was to increase the language and literacy skills of 980 participating preschool-aged children from underserved New York City communities. Then to recruit and provide a minimum of 40 hours of comprehensive early education training to 406 corps members. The third goal was to have a majority of corps members express improvement in their workforce readiness skills, including taking a leadership role and problem-solving with children, as measured by Jumpstart’s Corps Member Survey.
We were able to supplement our understanding of children’s growth using other sources of information. For several years, Jumpstart has been systematically collecting and analyzing Corps Member’s observations of their partner children’s skills. In 2021-2022, 70% of Corps Members reported seeing growth in their partner child’s language skills, including their use of new vocabulary and their ability to engage in conversation, and 63% of Corps Members saw growth in children’s social-emotional skills.
